Since the last full-length, the highly acclaimed "Streitmacht" (2017), the band’sline-up has changed and with guitarist Askar and drummer Isarn the quintet from the Bergisch Land welcomes two new brothers in their ranks. Both have influenced the album significantly with new elements, but ingrained fans do not have to fear fundamental changes in style. The 13 new songs just benefit from those new influences and OBSCURITY stand strong as a bastion in continuity and passion. Stylistically they still go with their own blend of Death, Viking and Black Metal, just the album’s bonus track is an experiment which differs slightly from the rest of the material. The lyrics are diverse and reach from Nordic mythology to contemporary social subjects... Once again the album was recorded and produced at 4CN-Studios by Tim
Schuldt. The cover artwork was created by Jan Yrlund / Darkgrove.net (Korpiklaani, Manowar, Tyr, etc.).

A very heavy and melodic sound starts off the album while the vocals also bring in a mixture of death metal growls and black metal screams. When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be be heard and the riffs also add in a lot of Swedish influenced melodies... All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them while the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also being done in a very melodic style and as the album progresses a brief use of spoken word parts, synths and acoustic guitars can also be heard... On this recording Obscurity takes the melodic sides of black, death and viking metal and mixes them together to create a sound of their own ... (darkdoomgrinddeath.blogspot.com)

The atmosphere of this album is fantastic. Makes you feel like you're knee-deep in the trenches drenched in mud, filth, sweat, and blood. Truly encapsulates the horrors of World War I, and the fact that the lyrics of some of the songs are taken from old war letters really adds to the authenticity. Extraordinary work by Antrisch, can't stop listening to it although Black Metal usually struggles to convince me. Same like for Antrisch's EXPEDITION I: Dissonanzgrat applies: This album is strong from its first sounds of creaking wooden hull to its last sounds of wind and waves, deciding for a favourite track would not do justice for the geniality of the remaining five, the one coming closest to a favourite one could be I FESTGEFROREN - Packeisfalle in my opinion. onkelchristoph

I follow MINAS MORGUL's albums loosely since "Schwertzeit", released back in 2002, but 2021's "Heimkehr" is the first album which really reached heavy rotation status! Maybe that's why I kept this release on my watchlist only for far too long. "Heimkehr" presents well balanced melodic yet powerful pagan black metal, somewhere between raging and anthemic. Most of the songs are catchy without being too simple. For sure MM's masterpiece so far! Check "Weltenfall". H.L.
